Which Adsense Ad Formats to Use?
The number of Google AdSense Ad formats available is now quite large and the rules on how many ads you can display on a web page have changed again so I have prepared this quick list of the formats and how you can use them on your Adsense site.
Vertical Ads, Shyscrapers and Buttons – are available in sizes ranging from 120 x 240, 120 x 600, 160 x 600. They fit very well down the sides of your page. If your Adsense page has three columns then you can position vertical ads in the two narrow columns.
Ad Squares and Rectangles – 200 x 200, 250 x 250, 336 x 280, work best when they are placed among the running copy of your Adsense web page
Horizontal Link Units – these are effective when they appear between paragraphs towards the top of the page or between your header block and the first paragraph of text
Vertical Link Units – you can position these in a side column navigation between blocks of links pointing to other pages on your Adsense site
Leaderboards – these come in two sizes, 728 x 90 or 468 x 60. They work best when displayed at the top of a web page.
Image Ads – these are obvious ads and nobody finds that they get any decent rate of clickthrough. Do not use them: you may occasionally see one on this blog. That is because the excellent Adsense automation tool that I use has no way of disabling Image ad at present
On each page of your Adsense Web Site or Blog you can currently display:
- Three Adsense ad units (described above)
- Three Adsense Link units (described above)
- Two AdSense for search boxes PLUS
- One Google Referral Button for each product: this means you could show One Adsense referral button, One Firefox Button, One Google Toolbar Button and One AdWords referral button.
