Google Changes – Good or Bad

Google – I Thought I Knew You?

You don’t REALLY know someone until you get back to their apartment, pop the cork on a bottle of wine, dim the lights, stare into their eyes and listen to them gush about every detail of their lives…and then you still don’t them.

It’s only after a few years of soul-stretching challenges do you really become intimately acquainted — married or not.

Well, as silly as the metaphor seems, that’s how I felt about Google Search recently. I thought I knew her as that clean but clever, elegant but athletic, beautiful eyed search muse behind a set of fancy bifocals. Turns out, I was only partially correct.

The vision of Google Search I had was a bit weird, I’ll admit… as I’ve come to find out, it was also a bit too dainty.

Google Search is much more powerful and complicated that I ever imagined! A social media marketer with the right “touch” can find much, much more than I ever knew.

The thing about Google Search is, she does a great job of hiding her search weapons and sleuthisms. Now, this is not a bad thing, not at all… there is something that is devastatingly attractive about a beautiful thing that is deep with intrigue and prowess.

So, now, I would like to introduce you to the REAL Google Search, but be careful… she is quick and sometimes a bit messy..I hope that’s OK. These tips will help you bend the web to your will using things only a few soothsayers can find using the “new” Google Search…

Adsense Plugin for Wordpress

I was recently looking for a plugin that would show Adsense ads in Wordpress blog posts, I wanted something that would enable me to stop the Adsense ads showing on a post if necessary.  The reason for this is that if the post is sponsored by an advertiser they do not want to see ads from another network in their paid blog post.   I am now using an excellent free plugin called Adsense injection.  This plugin places the Adsense ad units seamlessly in the middle of the blog post or page, and it displays them differently every time the page is reloaded.    You can also use this plugin with Yahoo Publisher Network.

There are plenty plugins that claim to make your Adsense ad units display better, and even increase the clickthrough rate.  Some of them actually breach Google’s terms of service and that is not a good idea.  Some of the ‘Adsense Plugins’ and Widgets simply failed to work when I uploaded them to my blogs. Eventually I found a very simple and effective plugin that will display AdSense Ads on a Wordpress Blog, the download instructions are simple and you can soon get ads in your Wordpress blog posts using this plugin.

Future with Adsense

I have been looking around at the conversations among real people (not just those trying to link to their latest ebook) on whether Adsense is a viable way to earn money online. We believe any income stream needs continual review, and AdSense is no different. There are three major areas of concern:

  • Publishers can make more money by keeping visitors on the site than sending them straight to a clickthrough link
  • That income can be cut off without notice by companies like Google.
  • Publishers have to work very hard to get visitors to their Adsense ads, and outside factors can reduce visitor numbers if the site search engine ranking falls.

Google Display Advertising – By Invitation Only

If you are a struggling Adsense publisher, you may not have heard of Google’s AdSense for domain, Google’s advertising channel for large domain name holders. Recently, Google started a new ad network but is not telling anyone about it – the Google Display Advertising Network.
Google set up the Display Advertising Network to gain advertising form Fortune 500 companies, which buy brand recogntion advertising as part of a long term marketing campaign. The perception of Adwords advertisers is that they are small to medium enterprises buying direct response advertising. Google already dominates the text and CPC ad amrket, so display and video ads are the next logical step. Google offers display and video ads to AdSense publishers on CPC and CPM format already. However, the formation of the Display Advertising Network is a clear signal that Google really wants to push this forward. Unfortunately membership of the Google Display Advertising Network is by invitation only.
These elite selected advertisers will be offered display and video ads at a very high CPM – unlike the AdSense network, the display network is 100% CPM based. Google will not divulge the revenue split to average AdSense publishers but they are much more open with the display network. Each member can negotiate a flat CPM rate with Google. The contracts are one year long and publishers have to guarantee to provide Google a minimum amount of ad inventory each month. Publishers can serve more than the minimum amount and still receive the same CPM rate.

Adsense Custom Channels Show You What is Working

Google now offers custom targeting channels for AdSense, an option that allows AdSense publishers to separate out the different google advertising blocks on their web pages. Adwords advertisers can also use the facility to monitor the top performing units and select them for their ads. Here is the official word on creating channels:

‘Custom channels allow you to track the performance of specific ad units based on your specified criteria. By pasting channel-specific ad code into your pages, you can track a variety of metrics across a range of URLs. Use custom channels to track the performance of different ad formats, for example or to compare different page topics to one another. To learn how to create and assign custom channels, please read How do I create custom channels?
