Adsense Referrals – another blow to Adsense Earnings

In case you have not heard, Google has decided to stop paying Adsense publishers in the UK and other countries for referrals of new Adsense publishers. They were advising publishers to remove any Adsense referral units from their web pages. But the referral facility is still continuing in many countries where Adsense publishers have readers, and they soon advised Google of the anomaly they had created. To their partial credit, Google have reconsidered their position and here is the latest advice from their blog:

The changes to referrals promoting AdSense will now depend on where your users are located, regardless of your location as a publisher. You’ll earn $100 for every user you refer to AdSense who is located in North America, Latin America or Japan when they generate $100 in AdSense revenue within 180 days and they remove all payment holds. You’ll no longer be paid for users you refer who are located elsewhere. These changes will go into effect the last week of January.

At least they have realised that the worldwide web extends beyond national boundaries but they still have not provided a reasonable explanation for taking another source of income away from Adsense publishers. Many Adsense sites have seen a huge fall in earnings over the recent few months and this is an unwelcome loss. Read more »

New Adsense Payment via Western Union

Good news for Adsense publishers where bank transfer payment is not available: Google is now paying Adsense earnings through Western Union. This is not as good as a direct payment in your bank account, but it is an improvement on sending cheques. Who benefits from the new Adsense payment option? If you are in Argentina, Chile, China (Mainland), Colombia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines or Romania the Western Union Quick Cash option is now available for your Adsense earnings to be paid. There is no cost to you if you choose to receive your Adsense payments this way and you can cash your payment at your nearest Western Union Agent on the day after the payment is sent from Google. If you choose the local payment option for your Adsense earnings you will need to show an ID document issued by your government so make sure your Google account name is exactly the same as it is shown on your identity document.

Adsense Allowed Sites Feature – where did it go?

Last week a ripple went through the world of Adsense Publishers with the release of Google’s new Adsense feature, the ‘allowed sites’ list. There were whoops of online glee from Adsense Webmasters and Bloggers in forums and blogs around the world. Here in the UK there was a national holiday last Monday so maybe that is why I was a little slow in deciding whether the ‘allowed sites’ facility was a good or bad thing. I need not have worried because, almost in the time it takes to say ‘widget‘, the feature had disappeared. The Google team in China developed this tool, which is similar to the way you ‘whitelist’ your list of email contacts so their messages reach your inbox. But there is a big difference: if a message drops into your spam folder by mistake you can get it back: if you fail to include a URL in your ‘Adsense Allowed Sites’ list you cannot get the lost Adsense earnings back. The advertiser will pay for the clicks, but it looks as if Google will keep the money. You can check Google’s own policy on this: with typical understatement, they include this advice in the Adsense Help Center:-

What if I forget to include some sites in my list of Allowed Sites?
If you forget to include some sites or URLs in the list of allowed sites, the earnings accumulated through those sites and URLs will not be credited to your account. Therefore, please make sure that you keep your Allowed Sites list up-to-date whenever you place the AdSense code on a new site or URL.”

So why was the Allowed Sites feature withdrawn so quickly, since it was a welcome addition for Adsense publishers who had been many of the concerned about code theft and click sabotage. Read more »

Adsense Ad Targeting

The official word from Adsense on ad targeting is
“We go beyond simple keyword matching to understand the context and content of web pages. Based on a sophisticated algorithm that includes such factors as keyword analysis, word frequency, font size, and the overall link structure of the web, we know what a page is about, and can precisely match Google ads to each page.”

  • Use “keyword-rich” copy as far as possible on all pages
  • Contain your keywords or phrases in complete sentences – avoid using them in bullet point lists (like this one!)
  • Emphasise your keywords with larger font sizes
  • Make your inbound anchor text keyword-rich. This means when pages (your own or other websites) use your keywords as the anchor for the hyperlink. For example a link to this site would read ‘Google Adsense Maximise Revenue

Adsense Ads Preview Tool

If you want to see exactly which ads are being displayed on your web pages, Google offers you its AdSense preview tool but this can only be used in Internet Explorer. It is a download tool and when you load up one of your pages your right click button will take you to the Adsense Preview Tool. I find the Google Preview Tool has its limitations, and of course it can only be used in Internet Explorer. As a Firefox user I find that limiting, and also the Google Tool requires your pages to be loaded into the browser for the sole purpose of looking at the ads.

I prefer to go to Digital Inspiration’s blog, where you simply type in the URL of your web pages to see exactly which ads Google will serve up on your web pages. Then you can go to the Adsense Sandbox, where you can check the Google ads fro your site just by typing your keywords. And if you are using Yahoo Publisher Network or the Chitika ads network the tool works for these as well. And the real strength of the Adsense Preview Tool is that it allows you to compare Yahoo to Google, or Google against Chitika, to see which ad network will display higher paying ads on your website.

When to use Adsense Adlink Units

Adsense link units have been around for just a couple of years and they are really small, you could easily miss them on a web page – unless they include a word that meets your needs as a reader. When you place Adlink units on your page you get four or five links. The size of the unit is 200 x 90 or smaller. Using conventional Adsense units you would get no more than one link in the same space. But nless your web page has high-paying keywords, it is probably best to use the conventional Adsense ad units first. You can include a link unit if there is space to do do sensible. Why do I say this? The reader sees only one or two words in each Adlink ad, so unless they are tightly targetted to the copy on the page they are less likely to attract a click.
Remember you can include three ad units, two AdSense for search boxes, one link unit plus one referral button per product (one AdSense referral button, one Firefox plus Google Toolbar plus one Adwords referral button).

Adsense Ad Format Changes

You may have already noticed it. The look of your AdSense units has changed. Be assured – you have not clicked the wrong button and accidentally removed your Adsense Ad formatting. The explanation is that Google has redesigned its Adsense ad units. The changes aren’t radical but they do offer a couple of small advantages.

First, the “Ads by Google” tag is now at the bottom of the unit instead of at the top. That means that users no longer get a little warning telling them that what they’re about to see are ad links. They see the links then they’re told that they’ve been looking at ads. That’s a nice little change.

The other change is the removal of the borders between ads within a unit.

That’s not a great surprise. Turning off the borders was always the first step in AdSense optimization. It seems as though Google has seen so many of its advertisers turning off the borders — and earning more as a result — that it has now removed the option of having internal borders altogether.

But that also means that you can have an external border around the ad unit without worrying about seeing lines between the ads. The only time that I can imagine someone doing that is if they had a very modular page with content placed in separate boxes. For the most part, this change is just going to lower the chances of new publishers accidentally putting up their ads with the worst form of poor formatting.

One thing we can be sure of though is that Google tested this new look before it came out — and saw better clickthroughs as a result. We should expect to see the same.

Adsense and Google Pack Referrals explained

I found some clarification from Google over their policy on Adsense and Google pack referrals. This is timely as many Adsense publishers were unsure if they could be breaching Google AdSense TOS by making explicit endorsements in referral advertisements. This is, of course, NOT allowed for Adsense content and Adsense for search ads. Read more »

Adsense Policy on Contextual Ads

Adsense publishers seeking to monetise their web pages are often uncertain whether they can display other advertising networks when they already have Adsense units on the same pages.

It can be difficult to interpret the Adsense Program Policy if you are thinking of signing up for another networks such as Text Link Ads, but the guidance should put your mind at rest. The main thing is to make sure that any other contextual ads you display alongside Adsense ads have a different appearance. They should use a different colour set from your Adsense Ads.

Here is the official Google Adsense Advice:
“You are welcome to display Google ads on the same site or page as other third party advertisements provided that the formatting or colours of the third party ads is different enough from that of the Google ads. In other words, if you choose to place non-Google ads on the same site or page as Google ads, it should always be clear to the user that the ads are served by different advertising networks and that the non-Google ads have no association with Google. If the formats are naturally similar, we ask that you choose different colour schemes for the competing ads.”

Adsense Previews of your pages

I received a question from a new Adsense publisher this week, asking if it is a breach of Google’s terms of service to view your own Adsense pages. Of course you need to check your pages from time to time, although you need to take care NOT to click on your own Adsense Ads. When you view your pages using Internet Explorer you can also install the Google AdSense Preview Tool. This is an addition to the right-click menu for Windows Internet Explorer 6.x, allowing you to preview the ads that may show on any web page. I find this has limited use, it can help you find the URLs of Made For Adsense sites that you can list in your competitive ad. filter.

Adsense Publishers News – Increased Adsense Commissions

AdSense pays all Adsense publishers for referring new publishers to the Adsense Programme. now any publishers can earn up to $255 for a single AdSense referral with the change made to the referral structure recently. Google has just announced that the referral commission has been increased and it will be paid sooner. First, You will get $5 for referring any new Adsense Publisher who signs up for Adsense and earns just $5 in their first 180 days. Then, if they earn $100 during that time you will be paid $250. So if you are not already signed up for Adsense, this is the time to start. The buttons on this page will help you Sign up for Adsense today and start earning from AdSense.

Traffic Exchanges will get your Adsense Site banned

I received an email from the owners of a blog traffic exchange, reporting that some members had received warnings from Adsense regarding click fraud. The traffic exchange owners say ‘there is nothing about —- that violates the Terms of Service of Adsense (TOS), however, it does appear that Google is leaning towards changing their terms to make any traffic generation tool a violation of their terms.’
I disagree with that interpretation- Adsense TOS already bans automated clicks and this is widely known, so you use traffic exchanges at your peril if you have Adsense on your site or blog. More advice on staying on the within Adsense terms of service:

Keep Up With Adsense Publisher Changes Easily

I’ve been looking back at what’s been happening in the world of AdSense over the last ten months or so… and I’ve been amazed at what I’ve found.

At least fifteen innovations that could affect the way publishers earn through AdSense. Some of those changes, such as larger image ads, are relatively minor. Others, such as video ads and multiple channels for ad units, have the potential to radically change the way we earn and work.

Fifteen Adsense changes — more than one a month. If I were looking at changes which have affected other contextualized ad programs, by the time I’d found them all, I’d have to start all over again. So what can we learn from looking at all these changes?

First, it’s become easier than ever for people who know nothing about the Internet to get online and start earning. If you’re new to AdSense, you can have a website online and be receiving your first ad clicks tomorrow. There’s never been a better time to start. But once you’ve started, the range of strategies for success as an Adsense Publisher is complex.

And there are more changes coming out all the time that have to be followed and understood. Lots of things are going to change on AdSense in the future, and we’re all going have to know what those changes are.
