I have been a bit slow on the uptake with the Google Search box on my web pages. It is not just there to help visitors if they cannot find what they want on your site. Last week a ripple went through the world of Adsense Publishers with the release of Google’s new Adsense feature, the ‘allowed sites’ list. There were whoops of online glee from Adsense Webmasters and Bloggers in forums and blogs around the world. Here in the UK there was a national holiday last Monday so maybe that is why I was a little slow in deciding whether the ‘allowed sites’ facility was a good or bad thing. I need not have worried because, almost in the time it takes to say ‘widget‘, the feature had disappeared. The Google team in China developed this tool, which is similar to the way you ‘whitelist’ your list of email contacts so their messages reach your inbox. But there is a big difference: if a message drops into your spam folder by mistake you can get it back: if you fail to include a URL in your ‘Adsense Allowed Sites’ list you cannot get the lost Adsense earnings back. The advertiser will pay for the clicks, but it looks as if Google will keep the money. You can check Google’s own policy on this: with typical understatement, they include this advice in the Adsense Help Center:-

“What if I forget to include some sites in my list of Allowed Sites?
If you forget to include some sites or URLs in the list of allowed sites, the earnings accumulated through those sites and URLs will not be credited to your account. Therefore, please make sure that you keep your Allowed Sites list up-to-date whenever you place the AdSense code on a new site or URL.”

So why was the Allowed Sites feature withdrawn so quickly, since it was a welcome addition for Adsense publishers who had been many of the concerned about code theft and click sabotage. Read more »

The number of Google AdSense Ad formats available is now quite large and the rules on how many ads you can display on a web page have changed again so I have prepared this quick list of the formats and how you can use them on your Adsense site.

Vertical Ads, Shyscrapers and Buttons – are available in sizes ranging from 120 x 240, 120 x 600, 160 x 600. They fit very well down the sides of your page. If your Adsense page has three columns then you can position vertical ads in the two narrow columns. Read more »

If you are a Firefox user - and most Adsense publishers tend to prefer browsing with Firefox - you may have encountered problems logging in to see your Adsense stats recently.  Publishers reported to Google that they were not seeing their usual login page, and it appears that the culprit may be a Firefox extension called Adblock plus.  If this is happening to you, here is the way to dela with it, direct from the Google hub: clear your cache and cookies and turn off the Adblock software before trying to log in at www.google.com/adsense. You may also wish to review our troubleshooting tips for login issues in the Google Help Center.

Here are some Adsense tips to increase income from your website or blog. Writing Keyword rich pages is part of the answer, but traffic must be driven there to generate earnings from them. To get visitors to your high paying keyword pages, you need excellent site navigation and the best Adsense style. You need to consider the way your readers will use the website. Once a reader has landed on a page, they will probably click through to a page if it looks interesting, by following links from the landing page. This is what site navigation is all about - helping visitors move about through your site, and also a key method to maximize your Adsense earnings.

Google has released a number of videos about the way Google works. One of the videos explains updates of the Google index - did you know Google updates parts of its index every day? That means that there is always an update going on. I have been trying to get some new pages indexed for nearly a week so I hope they crawl in my direction soon.

I found one of the videos extremely helpful for optimizing my sites.

Google has updated its webmaster tools area and Matt explains this in one of the videos. It is now a one stop shop where you can check which of your pages are indexed, whether the Googlebot had any trouble crawling your pages and get your google site map checked. Mostly it was very helpful although it does not explain all the sitemap errors so you can spend some time tracking them down. Just the thing for a geeky afternoon ..

I have mentioned before the tools you can use to filter out low paying Adsense Ads, which usually lead to Made for Adsense (MFA) sites. There are two reasons to try and prevent them appearing on your pages. First, they cost you money by taking space that could be used for regular Adwords ads. Second, if someone clicks a link and land on a spammy page full of irrelevant links they will associate these with you, and they are less likely to return to your pages.
