I am not convinced by all the scare stories floating around here about how difficult it is going to be to get a mortgage following the credit crunch. When I was a girl - how scary that phrase is now - one almost had to beg the building society for consideration for mortgages and they usually required a potential borrower to hold a savings account with them for at least a year before applying for a loan.  After the relaxation of the finance industry in the 1980s the uk mortgage industry exploded and the banks entered the market as well.  Once the consumer got more control over the process, there was no looking back.

In case you have not heard, Google has decided to stop paying Adsense publishers in the UK and other countries for referrals of new Adsense publishers. They were advising publishers to remove any Adsense referral units from their web pages. But the referral facility is still continuing in many countries where Adsense publishers have readers, and they soon advised Google of the anomaly they had created. To their partial credit, Google have reconsidered their position and here is the latest advice from their blog:

The changes to referrals promoting AdSense will now depend on where your users are located, regardless of your location as a publisher. You’ll earn $100 for every user you refer to AdSense who is located in North America, Latin America or Japan when they generate $100 in AdSense revenue within 180 days and they remove all payment holds. You’ll no longer be paid for users you refer who are located elsewhere. These changes will go into effect the last week of January.

At least they have realised that the worldwide web extends beyond national boundaries but they still have not provided a reasonable explanation for taking another source of income away from Adsense publishers. Internet Authors don’t need advice

Most writers in England waste a lot of their time posting off extracts of their exciting new manuscripts to publishers. Most of the time these would-be authors see their work come winging back, unwanted. That’s annoying enough in itself, but in some cases there is an even more unwelcome addition – advice. ‘Try a larger publishing house’ says the note. That’s meant to be helpful? Which publisher do they have in mind? What makes them think the other guys would want something that people here have decided is unpublishable? In most cases, unfortunately, unwitting authors take these snippets at face value and assume the creator knows some secret information that they are not privy to. They take the advice, they take the action, and are disappointed again when it leads nowhere. After all, an employee of a publisher might know what their own firm requires, (if they take the time to listen to their colleagues), but they are as much in the dark as the rest of us when it comes to discerning what the company down the street wants. When I get away from the laptop, I try to cram in some exercise to make up for the hours I sit around writing on my Adsense sites. At the gym I find I spend most of my time on the free weights, although I wish I enjoyed using the elliptical machines a little more. I think I need to get more cardio exercise and I must start making the effort.

One of my New Year resolutions for creating and running my Adsense sites more efficiently is to change my office layout. There is quite a lot of equipment now and I need a bulk cable
feed to stop the place looking like a jungle. Also, the dog nearly strangled himself on a trailing wire last week!
