I am not the only Adsense publisher who is suffering through Google’s policy of paying in $US.  I notice that colleagues are drawing attention to this problem as well. In the UK and Europe many of us have seen our earnings drop dramatically in real terms due to the weakness of the US Dollar over recent months.  The exchange rate against the pound has been well above $2 for a long time now, whereas two years ago the currency bobbed along around $1.5.  An Adwords advertiser in the UK does not benefit from the exchange rate - they still pay Google in £ for their ads.  Somewhere along the line there is some money being made from the markets. But at least Google pay by Bank transfer, inline Clickbank who still send cheques (sorry, checks) in $US to overseas publishers.

Adsense link units have been around for just a couple of years and they are really small, you could easily miss them on a web page - unless they include a word that meets your needs as a reader. When you place Adlink units on your page you get four or five links. The size of the unit is 200 x 90 or smaller. Using conventional Adsense units you would get no more than one link in the same space. But nless your web page has high-paying keywords, it is probably best to use the conventional Adsense ad units first. You can include a link unit if there is space to do do sensible. Why do I say this? The reader sees only one or two words in each Adlink ad, so unless they are tightly targetted to the copy on the page they are less likely to attract a click.
Remember you can include three ad units, two AdSense for search boxes, one link unit plus one referral button per product (one AdSense referral button, one Firefox plus Google Toolbar plus one Adwords referral button).

You may have already noticed it. The look of your AdSense units has changed. Be assured - you have not clicked the wrong button and accidentally removed your Adsense Ad formatting. The explanation is that Google has redesigned its Adsense ad units. The changes aren’t radical but they do offer a couple of small advantages.

First, the “Ads by Google” tag is now at the bottom of the unit instead of at the top. That means that users no longer get a little warning telling them that what they’re about to see are ad links. They see the links then they’re told that they’ve been looking at ads. That’s a nice little change.

The other change is the removal of the borders between ads within a unit.

That’s not a great surprise. Turning off the borders was always the first step in AdSense optimization. It seems as though Google has seen so many of its advertisers turning off the borders — and earning more as a result — that it has now removed the option of having internal borders altogether.

But that also means that you can have an external border around the ad unit without worrying about seeing lines between the ads. The only time that I can imagine someone doing that is if they had a very modular page with content placed in separate boxes. For the most part, this change is just going to lower the chances of new publishers accidentally putting up their ads with the worst form of poor formatting.

One thing we can be sure of though is that Google tested this new look before it came out — and saw better clickthroughs as a result. We should expect to see the same.
